Free*: Empowering Cyber Safety and Digital Wellbeing

In today’s interconnected world, the significance of cybersecurity and data protection cannot be emphasized enough. With the exponential growth of technology and our increasing reliance on digital platforms, individuals are constantly generating and sharing massive amounts of personal information. However, this digital landscape also poses significant risks, as cybercriminals continuously seek opportunities to exploit vulnerabilities in security systems and gain unauthorized access to sensitive data. The consequences of these breaches can be devastating, leading to financial loss, reputational damage, and even identity theft.

Statistics from the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SL-CERT) show that the category of information content security saw a significant number of incidents, with 1,115 incidents happening in 2020, which was a 56% increase from 2019. Abusive content (cyber harassment) that included harmful speech, fake accounts, child/sexual/violence-related content, cyberbullying, and racial harassment, witnessed 758 reported cases. This figure is notably around half the number of incidents that were reported during the earlier years with the number even exceeding 2000 during 2017. These figures seem to have increased during the latter years, especially during the pandemic which saw an increase of internet-related activities.

Recognizing these pressing concerns, the Rotaract Club of Achievers Lanka Business School took the step to launch Project Free* in the year 2019. Project Free* stands as a pioneering endeavor, dedicated to sparking conversations on cyber safety and digital wellbeing within Sri Lanka. This yearlong project has continuously evolved, empowering individuals to navigate the digital landscape with confidence and knowledge. Throughout the years, Project Free* has carried out a series of impactful initiatives, raising awareness and educating the public on various areas of cybersecurity and data protection. It has served as a driving force to equip individuals with the necessary tools to thrive in the digital age.

The initiatives conducted under Free* during the year 2022/2023 are as follows:

TechAware

TechAware was a collaboration between the Rotaract Club of Achievers Lanka Business School and the Interact Club of Royal Institute. This project delved into the impact of social media and technology on mental health. Recognizing the increasing role of these platforms in our lives, the project aimed to spark discussions and create awareness about the potential effects on mental well-being. Through a series of engaging and informative Instagram carousels and reels, TechAware provided insights, tips, and resources to promote digital wellbeing and encourage responsible use of technology.

Firewall

The Firewall project was conducted in alignment with World Cybersecurity Day, focusing on educating the audience about the potential threats in cyberspace. In an era where cybercrime is on the rise, individuals need to understand the importance of safeguarding their digital presence. The Firewall project aimed to empower individuals by providing practical knowledge and strategies to protect themselves and their data from cyber threats. Through an informative awareness campaign, online resources, and an Instagram challenge, the project emphasized the significance of cybersecurity practices such as strong passwords, data encryption, and safe browsing habits.

Privacy News Alert

Recognizing the ever-evolving landscape of data protection and privacy, the Project Free* introduced a new series of posts called “Privacy News Alert.” This initiative aimed to keep individuals informed about the latest developments and trends related to data protection, privacy of information, and cybersecurity. By sharing timely updates, news articles, and expert insights, Privacy News Alert aims to enhance individuals’ understanding of privacy-related issues and equip them with the knowledge needed to navigate the digital world safely.

Privacy Policy Deep Dives

Continuing from the previous year, the Project Free* extended its “Privacy Policy Deep Dives” series. This ongoing initiative involved analyzing and summarizing the privacy policies of major software and hardware products. By dissecting and presenting key aspects, conditions, and potential implications mentioned in these policies, the project aimed to promote transparency and help individuals make informed decisions regarding their privacy. Privacy Policy Deep Dives empowered individuals to understand the privacy practices of the digital products they use, enhancing their ability to protect their personal information.

Overall, Free* by the Rotaract Club of Achievers Lanka Business School has made significant strides in promoting awareness and education on various technology-related topics. By addressing the impact of social media on mental health, raising cybersecurity awareness, providing timely updates on privacy issues, and analyzing privacy policies, the project contributed to empowering individuals to navigate the digital world with knowledge and confidence. Through collaborations, informative content, and interactive initiatives, the Project Free* will continue to play a vital role in fostering a safer and more secure digital environment for individuals within the community.
