Education is by far the most important gift a child could be presented with and we must help the underprivileged so that they also acquire the necessary skills, knowledge, and intelligence and grow to become triumphant human beings. Thus the Rotaract Club of Achievers Lanka Business School commenced a project targeting the children of the slum areas of Kirulapona, Koombi Kale. This initiative commenced in October 2019. It is mainly focused on educating the underprivileged students in this area. It is the brainchild of the club’s current president Rtr. Sathma Jayasinghe. It was Mr. Ravi, who is a much-loved fixture at Achievers Lanka Business School who explained this necessity to the club. Together with the support and guidance of Pastor Ashean, this notion became a fully functional commitment.
The Sneha project is carried out on two days per week. Every week a team of four head down to the slum areas in Kirulapone to provide the most competent teaching they can contribute. On Saturdays, separate classes are allocated for students of grades 1 and 2, grades 3, 4, and 5 and grades 6, 7, and 8. Sundays are solely dedicated to students from grades 9 to 11. Mathematics and English are taught to all students for one hour each.
These lucky youngsters are also a part of a group known as the ‘Rangers’ where many exhilarating and thriving group activities take place. This program is fully organized by the pastor and is dedicated to improving the children’s skills such as leadership, communication, and also helps improve their mental well being. It includes activities such as singing, dancing, camping. The talents of these youngsters were showcased through a concert.
The 7th of March 2020 was my first day volunteering for the Sneha project. I was bursting with excitement (and not to forget the anxiety). “What if the kids don’t like me? What if I’m terrible at teaching?” were the gloomy thoughts passing through my head. Meanwhile, I was inwardly checking if my knowledge in Mathematics and English would be enough to teach the kids. Rtr. Vinuri Ramanayake, Rtr. Suwithi Karunasekara and two of her friends accompanied me to the Kirulapone Community Centre.
On our way, several youngsters were delighted to see Rtr. Suwithi with us. From what I gathered, she is a favourite among them. Thus, it was no surprise that they warmly welcomed us into their classroom on this particular day. The pastor, Rev.Ashean was delighted to see a crowd of five ready to teach. As we entered the classroom, there was a crowd of eager students poised with their books and pencils. Their classroom represented the quintessential primary class with little chairs and tables, which brought back fond memories from years ago.
Firstly, as per the popular demand of students (not really, it was decided by the teachers), there was a mathematics lesson. Rtr. Vinuri started the fractions lesson with a question on the whiteboard. Then there was a flurry of activity when the students hurried to become the first to finish the assignment. Addition and subtraction of fractions do not seem like the hardest thing to learn for you and me, but for 8-year-olds, we might as well be trying to teach rocket science. To their credit, they trekked through the world of fractional numbers with varying degrees of success. It was the first time I realized that teaching is not as easy as it seems to be. Fortunately, many understood, and they gathered around to make the others understand too.
During the English period, I was in charge of the youngest kid in the class, a boy in grade 1. We had an interesting conversation in English about his likes and dislikes (guess I came across as the only Sri Lankan male who hates cricket, apparently football is all the rage these days). He even read me a story from a book. I taught him to spell the seven days of the week, and after that, he sang nursery rhymes with his friends.
Hence, for two hours, every volunteer was deeply occupied in the task of improving their students’ knowledge. As the name of their village (Koombi Kale) indicates, the students were too mischievous for their good. But, it was a remarkable experience to spend time with them. Most of the kids were enthusiastic about learning, though a few struggled. For them, the highlight of that day could have been more related to the reward of ‘veralu’ rather than a red star. It’s always a plus if you can eat the props used for teaching fractions. Around 12.30 p.m, our time with them ended, we said our goodbyes, and left reluctantly with the promise to see them next week. I am proud to be a part of this project, though it tires you out considerably (it is not for the faint of the heart, trust me).
This initiative, ‘Sneha’, is one of many, in the Rotaract calendar in the avenue of Community Service. It plays a huge role in moulding children’s personalities, increasing their motivation and discipline. From school lessons to a surplus of life lessons, Rotaract Achievers has been active as an integral support to the young community in Koombi Kale.

சேரி குழந்தைகளை குறிவைத்து ஒரு திட்டத்தை ரோட்டராக்ட் கிளப் Achievers லங்கா பிசினஸ் ஸ்கூல் தொடங்கியது.
