What better way to commence a brand new year in Rotaract than with a project organized with a service motive and includes fun and fellowship?

The holy month of Ramadan includes Ifthar as a significant ceremonial rite which brings about the spirit of sharing and generosity and has just seen the Rotaract Club of Achievers Lanka Business School organize this project for the 5th consecutive year.

Planning and organizing had to be undertaken swiftly and the project’s chairpersons, Rtr. Rashmi and Rtr. Shalutha, wasted no time in contacting and allocating tasks to the members of the Club. Many orphanages were initially considered and contacted, but since they were already booked or visiting was restricted to either only ladies or gents, we were not able to go ahead with any of them. Hence it was decided that we would have this year’s Ifthar at the Ash-Shifaa, home for the differently abled, the place we held the event the previous year as well.

The budget was determined, tickets were printed and distributed to be sold, a committee was set up to get different aspects of the project done and we were all eagerly waiting to begin the year!

On the day of the project which was Sunday, the 3rd of July, our members got to Ash-Shifaa by 5:30pm and were greeted with much enthusiasm by the children there. The evening started off with games and activities which were planned by Rtr.Nafeel and Rtr.Rimzan,  where while some of the children played football with our club members,  the rest settled down to draw and color. It was certainly good to see how the older children were having fun despite a long day of fasting!

Following the interactive session was the time for Ifthar. Our members rolled out the mats and placed plates full of dates, bowls of porridge and cups of Faluda and water, just in time for the call for Azhaan. The children along with the members of our club, prayed and broke fast after which was our favorite part of the evening where the sawans of biryani were served and the children and our club members gathered around to eat from them.

Our evening with the children of Ash-Shifaa concluded with a group picture and it was indeed satisfying to know that the children had an enjoyable few hours in our presence, from their happy faces!

Congratulations to Rtr. Rashmi and Rtr. Shalutha on pulling off the first project of the community service avenue and the year as well and here is hoping that this positive start is a reflection of how the rest of the year is going to be!

What the Chairpersons Have Got to Say:

“It was indeed a fascinating and also a heartwarming experience organizing our annual Ifthar. This was our first project as the Community Service directors for the year and it was also the first project of our club in this new Rotaract year. It makes sense to kick start a year with a sense of giving and sharing, and that is what we did and it does feel good. We are certainly looking forward for a fruitful year ahead in this avenue of serving the needs of the community. We would not have been able to pull this off if it wasn’t for the support we received from the club.”
